Kathakali is one of the major forms of classical Indian dance. It is a “story play” genre of art, but one distinguished by the elaborately colorful make-up and face masks that the traditionally male actor-dancers wear. Kathakali has the most elaborate consisting of head dresses, face masks, and vividly painted faces. This is an abstract form of kathakali. Traditionally associated with the age-old dance form Chau Dance, an acrobatic martial dance of Purulia, West Bengal, where the performers wear the large stylized masks of various mythological characters and also different animals. Chau masks are made from paper pulp, cloth, and clay and undergo many interim processes before taking the final form.
